The building was part of a light industrial estate and the unit was one on two storeys. Planning permission was given for two units, a studio flat on the ground floor and a two storey live-work unit above. Another floor was added increasing the size by 30%. As natural light was only admitted from the front of the building, skylights were designed to light the rear upper floors and a balcony was created for the top flat.
The materials used were simple and with creative colour scheme an imaginative space was made. One level has the living room and dining room with the kitchen leaving enough space, all open plan, for work as required by the planners. A glass staircase leads to the bedroom level and balcony with gallery overlooking the space below.
The big windows to the front were formed in steel giving the building an industrial look while allowing the maximum light to enter the space. The conical casing to the steel column acts as a feature in the open plan volume.
