As Beckford School in West Hampstead was running out of space within the confines of the existing envelope to accommodate the medical centre and a space for parents’ meetings it was decided that it was time they put some outbuildings into use. This charismatic building utilises an existing disused outbuilding extended, to house the activities of the medical team and for parents’ meetings outside school time.
The building was designed with children in mind as it occupies a space in the playground. The materials chosen were London stocks for the walls, clay tiles for the roof and timber windows. These relate well with the architecture of the neighbourhood as well as the main school building. While the roof protects the windows projecting beyond the face of the wall, it lifts up to welcome visitors in to the building, with a smile.
